For years now, I haven’t been able to listen to music while I read. I can pinpoint exactly when I stopped being able to listen to music while reading, too! It was during a car ride in my teens, and I was reading a book (Nightmare Academy by Frank Peretti, if you’re curious) while listening to the same cd on repeat while I read (Thousand Foot Krutch’s album Phenomenon, if you’re curious about that, too).
Ever since then, I have always associated that album with that book, and vice versa. While that wasn’t necessarily a negative thing (I do enjoy both the book and the album I had been listening to!), it bothered me! I wanted to be able to think of the two as their own separate entities. What if I read a really horrible book in the future while listening to a favorite band, and it ruined that album for me?
I’ve tried classical or instrumental music, and while that’s nice and I do enjoy listening to it separately, I can’t listen to it while I read, either–but that’s more because I have such a hard time when the “tone” doesn’t match the subject matter of what I’m reading!
I did recently find, however, that I really enjoy listening to ambient noise while I read–especially RainyMood. RainyMood makes anything better. There are a few apps on my phone that I really enjoy, too, like Relax Melodies and Relax and Sleep, that let you completely customize your ambient noise to include as many or as few sounds as you’d like.
I’ve got to know: Am I alone in my strange, no-music-while-reading quirks?
Do you listen to music, ambient noise, or anything else while you read?
